The difference is the data path
In an upload-based tool, the browser transfers a PDF to a server, the server processes it and a result is downloaded. In a local tool, JavaScript and document libraries are delivered to the browser, and those programs read the file through temporary browser permission. The result is created in memory on the same device. Network requests for application code are not the same as transferring the selected document.
What the browser can do
Modern browsers can parse PDF structures, render pages, extract embedded text, run WebAssembly, perform OCR and create downloadable files. These capabilities make many everyday checks possible without a document backend. Performance depends on device memory and CPU, so local tools should set clear page and file-size limits and load large libraries only when a person opens the checker.
What local does not automatically guarantee
A site can claim browser processing while still sending analytics, error logs or extracted text elsewhere. Inspect the privacy policy and network behaviour. Local processing also cannot protect a compromised device, an unsafe browser extension or a report saved to an insecure folder. It reduces a transfer but does not solve every security problem. Claims such as “100% secure” should be avoided.
PDF Guard's current boundary
PDF Guard serves its PDF reader, worker, OCR runtime and English recognition model as static files. The PDF, page images, recognised text, checklist and analysis result stay in the active tab. Anonymous feature events exclude filenames and content. There is no document account, upload bucket or server-side document database. Closing or refreshing the page clears the working state; downloads remain on the device.
When local-first is useful
Local processing is a strong default for personal paperwork, draft internal documents and early review preparation. It can also work offline after required assets have loaded, depending on browser caching. Very large files, collaborative workflows and advanced models may require a different architecture. A responsible product should disclose that change before document content leaves the browser.
Open the relevant PDF Guard tool. The working document and extracted text remain in your browser.
