Check whether OCR is actually needed
Try selecting a sentence in the PDF viewer or searching for a distinctive word. If the viewer finds nothing, the page is probably image-only. A mixed PDF may contain searchable pages and scanned attachments. PDF Guard checks each page for existing text and sends only image-only pages through its local recognition stage. Avoiding unnecessary OCR saves time and preserves the more accurate embedded text.
Prepare the page
Use a straight, high-contrast scan with letters large enough to inspect. Rotate sideways pages, crop wide borders and avoid shadows from a phone camera. Roughly 300 dpi is a useful scanning target for ordinary print. Do not aggressively clean an archive copy; work from a duplicate if you need to rotate or crop. Handwriting, embossed stamps, faded carbon copies and complex tables remain difficult for general OCR.
Run OCR locally
Open the OCR PDF page, choose the document and leave local OCR enabled. The browser renders an image-only page to a temporary canvas and loads the recognition worker and English model from the same website. Recognition runs on your device. The first page may take longer while the model starts. The file bytes and resulting text are not posted to InYourTab or a cloud AI prompt.
Verify the transcription
Compare names, dates, identifiers, measurements and instructions with the scan. Watch for O versus 0, I versus 1, broken punctuation and reading-order errors in columns. OCR output is a navigation aid, not a certified transcription. If a character matters, inspect the source at high zoom. Keep a record of manual corrections if the text will support an important administrative or quality process.
Know when to stop
A very poor scan may not become trustworthy through repeated recognition. Rescan from the original when possible, request a better copy or ask a trained person to transcribe the key information. Split long PDFs into logical sections so the browser remains responsive. PDF Guard currently handles printed English and limits local OCR to twenty image-only pages per run.
Open the relevant PDF Guard tool. The working document and extracted text remain in your browser.
